Bikes in Place by darkdex52 Bikes in Place by darkdex52
This has been Humanity's thousands of years old answer to the question of what to do with things that have become obsolete and old. Throw them away and hope they become someone else's problem.

Second part of the "Bikes in..." series of photos, taken in Netherlands, the country of the bikes and social revolutions.

Just so someone didn't get it, the bike is underwater and has been underwater for a couple of months, if not years, by the looks of it.

Haunting, is the first word that comes to mind when I look at this photo.

There is something eerily beautiful about this picture, before it melds into something more troubling, and disturbing, as you look at it, and think about its implications; and all the trash we abandon.

The artist's comments about this piece are spot on. As humans, we have a disgusting tendency toward selfishly shoving our problems, our garbage, of all kinds, not just the literal, and physical, on to someone else, never being bothered to take responsibility. For me, this piece perfectly captures this tragedy.

I find many layers of interest here. I love the somber colors, and the faintly wobbly lines made by the view through the water, which adds to the ghostly, haunting aspect of all abandoned things.
It is a well composed piece. Simple, yet deeply thought provoking.

Great job!

The subtle shadows, the murky nature of the water, and the use of cold tones really makes this photo somber in the best of ways.

With dark tinges around the edges, it really brings into the center the balanced composition of the bike and helps to funnel our attention to it. The lighter vines towards the surface pull the viewer's eye around the mangled skeleton of the bicycle frame effectively here, really showing a haunting image when taken into consideration (that like a human corpse, nature too will eventually swallow it up). The feeling of abandonment, loneliness, just oozes from this piece with that thought in mind. How we bury and toss away things that are no longer state of the art - and how even the most avid collector of antiques and 'trash' can't save every 'treasure' from this fate.

By using the water here to the artist's advantage, it furthers a feeling of eerie sadness. The bits of algae (I think?) that almost resemble a vinegar stain effect on photo paper sets it in a world all its own and the floating debris that resembles underexposed spots further ages it. All of the natural growth in the water helps to add dimension and depth to this, the grain fuzzing up the contours that are further back and making those closest more crisp.

With the use of a limited palette, sticking to mostly blues with hints of green and red, it ties together the aforementioned feelings of sorrow and confirms the artist's intentions. There's a chill that comes from looking at it too long, the cold color that dominates it helping to bury the subject without obscuring it. If there were more hues added, instead of just the three used here in combination with the high and low lights, it would not be as effective in my opinion - so this is a wonderful example of using color to complete a mood.

There's not much I can say about improvement on this, adding ripples would have helped drive home the fact it is underwater but at the same time could have ruined the solitary aura it has. Well done!

I live in the Netherlands and I've seen lots of bikes at the bottoms of canals but I had no idea one could make such beautiful photo's of it! It has a very sad feeling to it, but that is fitting given the subject.

It gives you a strange feeling knowing that once it was someone's pride and joy and possibly a special present from a loved one.

the combination of an artificial creation and unchecked natural growth woven together in such an interesting location makes this very appealing , nature's organic media and man's geometry... it's almost like there's a battle going on between the two

Wait, this is underwater?? I thought it was in a smoky garage or something. That ambiguity makes me like it even more. Excellent photo.

Do bikes have a soul? If so this is contender for ghost bike... Such a sad and beautiful languor to the reclamation by Nature of that which so briefly served the artifice of man.  Ding ding!

darkdex52, thanks for the favourite for my poem "Halloween at Dom's House."  I'm sitting here reading about the demise of your poor dead camera.  My deepest sympathies.  You're close to your goal and I know you will reach it soon, if you haven't already.  But I had to tell you that your story brought to mind something my mother used to always say: "I wish I were rich instead of so gosh darn beautiful!"  Mom had a way with words.  Well, I'm not able to help financially ... but I have an idea.  The underwater photo of the bicycle and your comment about it stirs the emotions.  I think you should add some text to the photo (if you know how to use Photoshop) and use some of those catchy words/phrases to draw attention to it.  Obsolete, old, throw away, etc.  Use your words.  I honestly didn't know that the photo was an underwater image.  Your words/comments made me take a longer look.  Well, you will figure it out.  These things take time.  You may be in dire need of money ... but if you are doing what you love, the money will follow.

Love your photos. This had a particular resonance as it symbolises the aftermath of modern civilisation. I've always wondered what archaeologists way into the future would make of us. It also reminds me of Tom Waits' song Broken Bicycles. You have a wonderful eye for a good photo.
